A frost monitor - also known as a FrostControl - is a safety and discharge valve in the water system of your motorhome. It is used to protect the boiler and parts of the water pipes from frost damage by automatically draining water from the system at low temperatures.
How does the frost monitor work?
The heater in your motorhome is equipped with a safety or discharge valve. This valve prevents the water for water heating from freezing if the heater is not switched on during frost.
At temperatures below 3 °C, the safety and discharge valve opens automatically. This drains the water from the boiler and the affected part of the water system. This prevents freezing water from damaging pipes or the boiler.
The frost monitor works purely mechanically and does not require any electricity .
When can the safety and discharge valve be closed again?
As soon as the temperature at the safety and discharge valve rises above 7 °C again, the valve can be closed. The water system can then be refilled and used normally.
It is not possible to close the valve at temperatures below 7 °C.
Important information on frost protection
The frost monitor is an important component for protecting the water system, especially in the cold season or during longer downtimes.
If the vehicle is not used for a longer period of time, the safety and discharge valve should be opened and the heater or boiler completely drained.
The water pump and the water fittings are not protected against frost by the safety and discharge valve and must be drained or protected separately.
The discharge nozzle of the safety and discharge valve must always be free of soiling (e.g. Leaves, dirt or ice) so that the water can run off unhindered.
How do I close the safety and discharge valve?
To do this, turn the rotary knob (image below, 1) at right angles to the safety and discharge valve and press the push button (image below, 2) in.
The closed safety and discharge valve is shown in the picture below. At temperatures below 7 °C, the safety and discharge valve cannot be closed.
